Burn the Plow
Read 1 Kings 19:1 through 20:43; Luke 20:9–26
Lynsey’s mom and dad heard a thump on the floor coming from their child’s bedroom. They rushed upstairs to find her getting up from the floor. They asked “Did you fall out of bed?”
“Yes,” she said. “I got too close to the getting-in place.”
It is the case with so many who have decided to serve God and haven’t followed Him with all their might. They stay too close to “the getting-in place.” Not so with Elisha. When he accepted the call from Elijah, he had no intention of turning back.
So Elisha left him and went back. He took his yoke of oxen and slaughtered them. He burned the plowing equipment to cook the meat and gave it to the people, and they ate. Then he set out to follow Elijah and became his servant (1 Kings 19:21).
One hundred years ago, young Will Borden was preparing to be a missionary to China. He left a life of wealth and privilege but died in language school. In his Bible were found the words, “No Reserve, No Retreat, No Regrets.”
Challenge for Today: Make “I have decided to follow Jesus, no turning back” the theme of your life.
