Moments of Courage

Read Job 29:1 through 31:40; Acts 7:31–60

When his children’s wrestling and roughhousing crossed the line from fun to dangerous, a young father would utter the same phrase his father had said to him years before: “Don’t let a few moments of courage ruin the rest of your life.”

Stephen had more than a few moments of courage and it didn’t ruin his life. It catapulted him toward eternity as he spoke Holy Spirit-inspired truth. His words infuriated the high priest and the members of the Sanhedrin.

“You stiff-necked people! Your hearts and ears are still uncircumcised. You are just like your ancestors: You always resist the Holy Spirit!” (Acts 7:51).

The Sanhedrin stoned him. But the long-term outcomes were significant: Stephen is honored as the first martyr of the early Christian church. The persecution that followed scattered the believers, who in turn spread the gospel. The man who held coats for those who killed Stephen was eventually saved and became the man Christians know as the apostle Paul.

Christians facing trouble for their faith must stand strong like Stephen even if there are consequences. The impact of such bravery may be beyond measure.

Challenge for Today: Be courageous for Christ.
